Saturn Edible Garden

Lowes ToolboxSaturn recently won a Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant to fund the creation of the Saturn Edible Garden! The $4,500 grant will pay for irrigation, tools, wheelbarrows and curriculum. Construction will begin in February pending funding for asphalt removal. Look for volunteer work days this Spring!

Victory Garden Classes

UC Cooperative Extension has selected Saturn's new Edible Garden as the site of a four-week Victory Garden class taught by Master Gardener George Pessin.  The weekend classes, open to everyone in the community, will take place throughout the month of April, 2010.  Stay tuned for more details.

The Rings of Saturn is a group of parents and community members dedicated to helping our neighborhood school deliver outstanding learning experiences.

Formed in the Spring of 2009, so far the Rings have:

  • Won a grant from Target to bring performing artists to school assemblies;
  • Won a grant from the Children's Nature Institute for phase one of the Saturn Native Garden in a formerly weed-choked corner of campus (the Pico Neighborhood Council is funding the next and final phase);
  • Recruited an Advisory Committee to help develop a Master Plan to transform the Saturn campus into a park-like setting open to the community when school is not in session.
  • Won a Lowe's Toolbox for Education grant to help fund construction of the Saturn Edible Garden.

At our first 2010 meeting, we'll talk about upcoming campus greening projects, fundraising strategies to support more enrichment programs for Saturn students, and Rings bylaws including elections for next year's officeholders.

Please join us to learn more about how you can get involved in supporting our wonderful school!

New Life on Saturn! PDF Print E-mail

Admiring BeesBeesThis week Saturn students planted the Saturn Native Garden, featuring  plants native to our area that will provide habitats for native wildlife. And the wildlife has arrived already!

Before the Coast Live Oak (far right photo) was even planted, a group of migratory bees chose it for the site of a rest stop on their way to Mexico. These bees are non-aggressive and will only be visiting for a few days to rest and refuel before continuing their Children's Nature Institutelong journey.  Our special visitors provided a wonderful opportunity to learn about migration, and to practice the all-important 'bee freeze' - the safest response to seeing a bee.

As part of planting day, sponsored by the Children's Nature Institute through their Urban Nature Week grant, several classes of Saturn students planted achillea millefolium (common name: yarrow) that they had cared for in their classroom for the past week.

Saturn students also mulched the garden, learning about decomposition and evaporation.

Classes will continue to care for the new Native Garden, participating in a rotating watering schedule and keeping journals to track the growth of their plants.

The Coast Live Oak and surrounding plants in the Northwest corner of the garden will be planted as soon as the bees continue their migration.  Visit the Saturn Native Garden anytime - it's visible from Saturn Street!  Read more about the Saturn Native Garden's plant list, and how the site was prepared using sheet mulch.

This planting represents phase one of the Saturn Native Garden project, which is possible due to the generous support of the Children's Nature Institute and their wonderful educators, to Saturn teachers who have so fully embraced the garden and, most of all, to Saturn students for their contagious enthusiasm for learning!

The rest of the project, including the construction of a pergola and walking paths will be sponsored by the Pico Neighborhood Council under a joint use arrangement with the school.

The Rings of Saturn are helping to recruit volunteers for a variety of critical roles:

CATCH Mentors
CATCH stands for Caring Adults Teaching Children How.  This program, developed at Community Magnet Elementary School, pairs a volunteer adult with a student to meet for one hour every week.  Saturn has participated for several years, and the results are powerful!

Following a helpful volunteer orientation, CATCH mentors and mentees spend their time together reading, working on homework, and getting to know each other.  Saturn teachers choose mentees who are likely to benefit from one-on-one time with a native English speaker or a consistent, engaged adult figure.

If you have just one hour per week, you can make an enormous difference! If you know you can commit the time, but you're not sure it can always be the same day and time, please join the program.  We're happy to work with you.

Extracurricular Programs
Are you an enthusiastic coach?  A retired piano teacher?  A devoted gardener?  Then Saturn wants YOU!  We welcome volunteers who can help us expand the extracurricular programming we offer to our students, including physical fitness and athletics, arts, and a whole range of science and art programming for the school garden we hope to build.

Days of Service
We sponsor several service days throughout the year where community volunteers make a huge impact on our school.
